Unlocking

Starting from the Bonfire: once you reach Act II, focus on completing your quests. When you reach the Bonfire questline, the system unlocks. The sections below explain each tab and how to progress your Bonfire.

Core mechanics

Just unlocking the Bonfire is enough — it passively generates Ash over time. You do not need to farm specific mobs in a specific area. You can add wood (prefer Act II Ironwood / Frost Wood) to boost income, but the higher the burn rate, the worse the wood-to-Ash conversion becomes.

Defeating each boss and sacrificing its heart permanently raises the Bonfire by 2 levels, and you can use fuel to push it up two tiers temporarily. With all three bosses done, it should stay permanently maxed — you only add extra fuel if you want more Ash.

Tab 1 — Fire

On the Fire tab, Fuel is on the left — this is where you feed the flame. Do not burn raw wood; always use Chadcoal (in-game name) for far more fuel value. Take Ironwood logs from the Act II tree, craft Chadcoal at the Smeltery, and feed your Bonfire.

Fire tab — key concepts
TermWhat it means
HeatYour Bonfire’s heating power. Higher is better. Heat points unlock the bonuses on the Bonuses tab: when you cross thresholds, you gain those bonuses while Heat is being fed.
Bonfire tierBonfire tier rises as you progress. Take each boss’s base item and sacrifice it at least once to unlock that sacrifice’s branches. That raises Bonfire tier; eventually you can keep the fire burning cheaply while still hitting high Heat scores for the best bonuses.
Fuel remainingHow long the Bonfire stays lit. When it reaches zero, the fire is out — refuel in time.
Ash (rate)Ash is spent on account upgrades (Ash talent tree and Sacrifice tabs). A lower “ash per second” value is better: e.g. 1 in 10 means a 10% chance that second to drop Ash — roughly one Ash every 10 seconds on average.

Ash — numeric example (spreadsheet)

Reference table from the guide: time conversion and the relationship between chance (1/n), Ash percentage, and effective rate. The main row below uses a 1/7 example from the sheet; your in-game display may show a different n (e.g. 1/15 in the Fire snapshot). At 100% Ash, total seconds match the “Ash/s” rate; lower percentages scale from that base.

Tab 2 — Bonuses

Bonuses on this tab become active based on your Bonfire Heat score — more Heat, more bonuses. They are temporary: they only apply while the Bonfire is lit.

Tab 3 — Ash (talents)

This is the Bonfire talent tree; it is account-wide. Early on, follow the line that improves Ash gained (More Ash).

Later in Act II, invest in other lines: Smeltery speed, fuel, burn reduction, and Auto Runes (runes go straight to the rune bag).

Tab 4 — Sacrifice

Account-wide upgrades: use each Act II monster’s base item plus Ash. Early on, it is worth pushing Attack and Tree Cutting toward 10/20 before going further.

With those upgrades plus a +11 Steel hatchet, you should be able to hit the Hit kill thresholds on Act II trees.

After the Ash talent tab is complete, you can keep sacrificing and maxing lines. Hard mode Act II and better cards can raise caps — sacrifice levels can go beyond 20/20.

Upgrade example (UI)

Guide card example: Cutting Edge Technology — boosts Woodcutting power. State: upgrade 13/20. Values: current x2.3 | next x2.4. Example costs: 15.1K of the leaf resource and 900 of the gold/ember resource. With this upgrade and a +11 hatchet, the guide states it should be enough to reach Hit kill thresholds on Act II trees.

Progression by stage

Novice

To start, you need maximum Heat bonuses for Act II. When you get there, you are still weak for the map, you just changed gear, and re-equipping takes time. Focus as fast as possible on Woodcutting power to get more Act II wood, craft Chadcoal, and feed the Bonfire — it makes a huge difference.

Intermediate

Your priority is the one-time boss sacrifice to unlock the three sacrifice stages. The more boss sacrifices you perform, the higher Heat becomes and Bonfire tier increases — you can then keep the Bonfire burning while spending much less and lasting much longer.

Hardcore

Your goal is to max sacrifice levels and continue in Hard mode Act II — levels will exceed 20/20. It is recommended to raise the ATK Bonfire to 20/20 and then the DEF Bonfire to 20/20; these two are your priority to advance character stats. Stats from sacrifice are account-wide.
