Quick Answer
Hourglasses in Evitania Online are a time-skip currency that fast-forwards your current active character based on your offline stats. You get them from the gem shop, daily login bonuses, quests, events, and a 1-in-10 base drop chance from boss chests. They affect combat gains, profession gains (mining / woodcutting / fishing when added), and ash-per-kill chance from the Ashen Ring and Bonfire Heat Level. They do not affect other characters, daily reward resets, the Smelter, Act 2 Bonfire ash from fuel, the Act 2 Pet Egg, or Act 3 Curio coin gains.
Hourglass levels require Sand: Level 2 costs 1B (10^9), Level 3 costs 1Qa (10^15), Level 4 costs 1Sp (10^24), Level 5 costs 1UD (10^36), Level 6 costs 1A (10^51), Level 7 costs 1B (10^69), Level 8 costs 1C (10^90), Level 9 costs 1D (10^114).
For ash and Bonfire context, see the Bonfire database. Boss chest drop lists live on the Monsters & Bosses page.
The Friction Point That Made Me Rethink Hourglasses
Hourglasses look like a simple “skip waiting” button, but the math behind what they multiply and what they ignore is easy to misread.
I kept burning Hourglasses early on expecting them to boost everything I had going on. Turns out, they only apply to your active character’s offline-derived gains, and a lot of passive systems are completely excluded. Once I mapped out exactly what gets affected, my progression speed changed noticeably.
If you’re sitting on a pile of Hourglasses and wondering whether you’re using them efficiently, this is the breakdown I actually use.
Where I Farm Hourglasses and the Drop Rates That Matter
Hourglasses are not a rare commodity if you know where to look. Here is every source I have confirmed so far:
- Gem Shop — Direct purchase, always available.
- Daily Login Bonuses — Consistent free income.
- Quests — Various quests reward Hourglasses.
- Events — Limited-time sources that refresh.
- Boss Chests — 1 in 10 base chance per boss chest.
My rule: I never buy Hourglasses from the gem shop unless I have a specific offline session planned. The boss chest drop rate is generous enough that farming bosses is my primary income source. If you’re grinding bosses anyway, the Hourglasses are a bonus, not the goal.
Note: The 1-in-10 base chance is for all bosses I have encountered. I have not found a boss with a better or worse rate.
What Hourglasses Actually Do (And What They Ignore)

Hourglasses skip time for your current active character based on your offline stats, which you can find in your menu on the bottom right. Increasing your offline gains directly increases the value of every Hourglass you use.
Affected
- Combat gains if you’re fighting
- Profession gains if you’re mining or woodcutting (likely fishing when it gets added)
- Ash per kill chance % from both the Ashen Ring and Bonfire Heat Level
Not affected
- Your other characters
- Daily reward reset times
- Smelter
- Bonfire ash from burning fuel (Act 2)
- Pet egg (Act 2)
- Curio coin gains (Act 3)
Warning: Do not use Hourglasses expecting them to progress your inactive characters. They only apply to your current active character. I tested this personally, and the idle gains for other characters stayed untouched.
Scientific Notation Increments I Use for Planning
When you get into higher Hourglass levels, the Sand costs scale into scientific notation fast. Here is the full table of increments so you know exactly what you’re looking at.
| Abbreviation | Amount |
|---|---|
| (none) | 0 (= 0.00×10^0) |
| K | 1×10^3 |
| M | 1×10^6 |
| B | 1×10^9 |
| T | 1×10^12 |
| Qa | 1×10^15 |
| Qi | 1×10^18 |
| Sx | 1×10^21 |
| Sp | 1×10^24 |
| Oc | 1×10^27 |
| No | 1×10^30 |
| DC | 1×10^33 |
| UD | 1×10^36 |
| DD | 1×10^39 |
| TD | 1×10^42 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^45 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^48 |
| A | 1×10^51 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^54 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^57 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^60 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^63 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^66 |
| B | 1×10^69 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^72 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^75 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^78 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^81 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^84 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^87 |
| C | 1×10^90 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^93 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^96 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^99 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^102 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^105 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^108 |
| (unnamed) | 1×10^111 |
| D | 1×10^114 |
Note: “Yellow” does not exist in the game yet. I keep this table handy because the unnamed increments are easy to misread when you’re deep into the endgame. Also, B appears twice in the abbreviation ladder — once at 10^9 and again at 10^69 — so always check the magnitude when reading costs.
Hourglass Levels and the Sand Costs I’m Working Toward
Each Hourglass level requires a specific amount of Sand, and the scaling is brutal. Here is the full cost table:
| Hourglass Level | Cost |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | B (1×10^9) |
| 3 | Qa (1×10^15) |
| 4 | Sp (1×10^24) |
| 5 | UD (1×10^36) |
| 6 | A (1×10^51) |
| 7 | B (1×10^69) |
| 8 | C (1×10^90) |
| 9 | D (1×10^114) |
My current route is to prioritize getting to Level 4 first, because the jump from Level 3 to Level 4 is the last “reasonable” cost before the exponential wall hits. After that, I only push levels when I have excess Sand from events.
Tip: Do not rush Level 5. The cost jumps from 1Sp (10^24) to 1UD (10^36), which is a 12-order-of-magnitude increase. It is not worth slowing down other progression for that jump early on.
The Item Names I Track for Hourglass Progression

The Hourglass system ties into a specific item chain. Here are the 15 items I have confirmed so far:
- Sandstone Sample
- Glass Sample
- Water Sample
- Clay Block
- Bit of Knowledge
- Liquid Glass
- Limestone Mass
- Prestine Glass
- Cromlech Bricks
- Condensed Vortex
- Sol Essence
- Locked Orery
- Golden Bite
- Golden Scales
- Golden Claw
Note: Some of these items require timeline unlocks — the ones marked orange in-game are not available from the start. I would not recommend planning around the later items until you have confirmed they are unlocked in your current timeline.
